This is where I got my "Birth Sherpa" idea.  I really do feel like a Sherpa climbing the birth mountain with each mom and partner.  Some mountains are higher than others and each journey is different.   It's such a privilege and honor to take each journey with the couples as they become a family.

I love being a guide through birth and watching moms reach the top.  The summit has been reached when mom is holding her baby in her arms.  The next journey (parenthood) begins and they start a new adventure together.  They are thankful for my guidance and support.  But, I did not carry them to the top.  They did it together.  I was there to support them without telling them which way they had to go. The journey is theirs!

Whether you decide to have a Birth Sherpa (doula) as your support,  enjoy the journey.  It is such a special and amazing adventure.  May your journey be special and powerful!

]]>Wed, 21 Aug 2013 15:38:00 GMThttp://www.kinsleybirthservices.com/blog/doulas-complete-the-circle-of-careI get so frustrated when possible clients think that the hospital staff will provide everything they need in support.  I know I have never seen a nurse,  ob or midwife stay in the room for hours.   They need to come and go because they have plenty of things to do(they are overworked).   I wish folks would realize why there are doulas in the first place.   We help fill in the spaces and are devoted to just that patient.   Together with medical staff we complete the team of care to help make it the best experience.

I encourage every woman who is in labor to focus on their breathing and make sure they are getting good breaths.  It is good for you and for your baby. So the next time you have any pain or discomfort in your body, try taking slow, deep breaths and see the oxygen difference.  It has worked for me and many others.  Give it a try.  You need oxygen so it can’t hurt!
