"Doula is a Greek word whose definition has come to mean a woman who helps other women. The word further evolved to mean a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the mother before, during, and after childbirth."
(From The Doula Book by Klaus, Kennell and Klaus)
Studies have shown that women with continuous support of a doula have lower cesarean delivery rate, lower epidural and pain medicine use, reduction in length of labor, lower use of oxytocin, an overall better feeling of the baby and the list goes on.
A doula:
A doula does not replace any other supporters, including the partner. A doula is not a medical professional that does such tasks as fetal heart rate, cervical checks or any other necessary procedures.
